Finding a spot to sip a cup of Joe and read a good book isn't hard in Washington D.C. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor places perfect for a hot beverage and a little quiet reading. Here are a few of the top spots in the DC area for indulging in a leisurely hour of reading with your coffee:

Busboys and Poets - 2021 14th Street NW

This bookstore on the U Street Corridor focuses on stocking literature that highlights populations who have suffered discrimination.  After selecting a book from the diverse collection, head over to the attached cafe and select from drink options ranging from an espresso to a sweet spiced latte to a thin mint latte that features a mouthwatering mix of ingredients, including peppermint syrup.  

The Potter's House - 1658 Columbia Road NW
This non-profit bookstore in Adams Morgan is a local favorite that carries many fair-trade products including crafts and coffee with all profits going to support the store as well as the local community. A slice of delicious pie, a cup of coffee and your favorite book will make for a great afternoon here.

Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe & Grill - 1517 Connecticut Avenue NW

Kramerbooks is another local favorite, located just above Dupont Circle, that provides both a bookstore and a cafe. Relax with your favorite magazine or a new book as you sip your coffee and indulge in a piece of chocolate cake.  Kramerbooks offers a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu with some delicious desserts. You can even enjoy a cocktail here, if you prefer or order coffee with a kick to make your reading material all the more interesting.

Politics & Prose - 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW

Another D.C. hotspot frequented by tourists, locals and politicians alike,  Politics & Prose provides a bookstore and cafe unlike any other. Books are scattered all over the store, interspersed with artwork and occasional live performances. The cafe serves coffee, sandwiches, salads and a few sweets as well, making for an intimate, cozy environment.   They even host literary programs and classes of all types on an ongoing basis.
