What Are the Top Holiday Activities in Washington DC?

Washington, DC offers a number of family-friendly activities during the holiday season.  Here are the top choices for your Christmas fun:

See the National Christmas Tree

From dusk to 10 pm, the National Christmas Tree is illuminated, along with the Pathway of Peace.  The lighting ceremony starts December 1st and the trees are illuminated throughout the entire month. The National Christmas Tree is a large evergreen tree located in the northeast quadrant of the The Ellipse near the White House. The pathway loops around the National Christmas Tree and features 56 unique Christmas trees to represent each U.S. state, U.S. territory, and the District of Columbia.

Go on a Candlelight Tour

Enjoy the /many historic homes by candlelight. Favorites include a tour of the Mount Vernon estate in Alexandria where you can learn about the Christmas traditions of George Washington and his family.  Alexandria also hosts candlelight tours at five historic sites in Old Town -- all of which are festively decorated to celebrate the season.

Enjoy the Holiday Toy Train Exhibit

Toy trains have long been a family favorite activity for the holiday season.  Starting in November and running through regular shopping hours, Union Station on Capitol Hill offers a miniature wonderland with fishing villages, farms, churches, a ski jump and of course, plenty of trains.

Take in Christmas Light Displays

The many light displays in the DC area that spring up during the holiday season in the parks and along the Potomac are a terrific way to share the holiday magic.  The National Zoo presents a seasonal display of thousands of sparkling animated lights.  The Old Town Alexandria Marina is the starting point for a dazzling display of festively decorated pleasure boats that parade along the Potomac River in early December.

All of these activities are a great way to enjoy the holiday season with the family.
