Barracks Row is a five-block stretch of Eighth Street, SE, in the Eastern Market neighborhood on Capitol Hill that has seen its fortunes dramatically change for the better since the late 1980s and 1990s. Once dismissed as a seedy area to be avoided, Barracks Row is now home to families and an eclectic collection of small, thriving businesses, restaurants, and bars. Just a short walk from the Capitol, Barracks Row is increasingly known as "the place" for Capitol Hill staffers to grab a drink following a long day and for anyone looking for good food and nightlife. The Barracks Row commercial roots are well-established. Because of its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard, established in 1799, Barracks Row evolved into the oldest commercial district in DC. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson installed the Marine Corps to assist in protecting the Anacostia River, positioning the Marine Barracks as the center of the strip. This didn't preclude Barracks Row from sliding into a decades-long decline which started after WWII, culminating in the riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968.
Community Transforms the Neighborhood
Much of the Barracks Row transformation is due to the efforts of home owners and small business owners who banded together in 1999 to form the Barracks Row Main Street Group. The group has done everything from replacing worn sidewalks to replanting trees and flowers and continues to take an active role in the neighborhood's growth today. Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital is a monument to the revitalization efforts of the group. The imposing structure once housed Confederate soldiers taken prisoner during the Civil War and later served as a training school for sailors to learn nursing skills before serving as a home for retired seamen. Today Hill Center is home to a a number of recreational, educational, and cultural programs that contribute the vibrancy of the neighborhood.
Homes Rise in Value
The small supply of housing stock has also seen its value change with properties in 2014 selling in the $300,000s to upwards of $2.85 million. The adjacent residential side streets feature lovingly restored early 20th century townhouses sporting bright colors ranging from red, green, and orange and the ubiquitous front porch or stoop from which neighbors can take the pulse of the neighborhood. Barracks Row also boasts a small collection of so-called "shotgun" homes where the front door and back door are aligned so that you could in theory shoot a bullet in the front door and out the back.
Favorite Destinations
Favorite eateries range from The Ugly Mug, the avowed best place for a pre-Nationals game burger and beer from one of the 20 selections on tap -- to fresh oysters and cocktails at Senart's Oyster Bar and Chop House. The Banana Cafe serves Cuban and Puerto Rican fare with a live piano bar upstairs and is considered the best "happy hour" by many Hill staffers. Fusion Grill combines Asian entrees from around the world with an assortment of beer, wine, and fruity cocktails including the popular Fusangria Sake. And, of course, Rose's Luxury, Bon Appetit's "Best New Restaurant" in America also makes its home in Barracks Row. Nightlife is not the only draw of Barracks Row. Some of the small businesses lining the street offer fresh sushi, cupcakes, and upscale wine selections. Homebody, a purveyor of stylish urban home goods, stocks umbra frames and Bodum coffee and tea supplies, as well as a sleek collection of couches, and small tables.
Regardless of your tastes, Barracks Row offers something for everyone and increasingly is becoming a distinctive addition to the DC Scene.

Related Links

Deals are made, sales are negotiated and quid pro quos are exchanged -- all in muted voices and in elegant settings, of course, -- and often on expense accounts. The following is a quick compilation of some of the best places to see and be seen during the power lunch hours of 12 - 2pm.
Located steps away from Capitol Hill, Charlie Palmer, The Monocle and Johnny's Half Shell frequently host some of the most prominent names in Washington.
Charlie Palmer, 101 Constitution Avenue, NW
Known equally for its "cowboy steaks," impressive views of the Capitol and private dining areas, Charlie Palmer is a modern American steakhouse. The management estimates serving between 70 and 80 congressmen and 20 to 30 senators a week, depending upon if Congress is in session.
The Monocle, 107 D Street, NE (Senate Side)
Founded in 1960, The Monocle is the closest restaurant to the U.S. Capitol Building and Union Station. The Monocle is known as the Capitol Hill neighborhood's "first table cloth restaurant" having formalized what was once a largely take-out food experience. Today, The Monocle offers a steak and seafood menu with a number of specials
Johnny's Half Shell, 400 North Capitol Street, NW
Located one block from Union Station, Johnny's Half Shell is a seafood restaurant popular with Capitol Hill staffers and policy wonks as well as elected officials. The restaurant offers free parking at night.
Cafe Milano, 3251 Prospect Street, NW
Cafe Milano in Georgetown is a favorite of Secretary of State, John Kerry, as well as a frequent stop for the celebrity set, including George Clooney and his rat pack, among others. Michelle Obama reportedly celebrated her birthday there not too long ago. Known for its refined pasta dishes and extensive wine cellar, Cafe Milano also offers a stylish sidewalk patio and sumptuous desserts, including a trio of creme brûlées.
The Palm, 1225 19th Street, NW
Located at nearby Dupont Circle, The Palm is another fixture on the power circuit. The storied steakhouse chain has served every president from Richard Nixon to Bill Clinton. Cabinet Secretaries, Supreme Court justices, the city's top lobbyists, strategists, and journalists are also all frequent visitors to the gentlemen's club-like surroundings. True "regulars" earn the honor of their picture (a drawing) up on the wall. Power couple James Carville and Mary Matalin, former Democratic and Republican party strategists, respectively, and now CNN commentators, reportedly asked that portraits of their dogs replace any likeness of them.
While many of the restaurants not only attract DC's movers and shakers, they are also adept at serving a stellar meal and accordingly boast a steady traffic from the best of the business world. Yet in these power lunch environments the emphasis continues to be on the power rather than the lunch, not matter how appealing and beautifully presented.

Related Links

The list below of the top wine bars in the Capital City is in no particular order but gives visitors the opportunity to sample some of the best vintages from around the world, paired with sumptuous small plates.

Food trucks are becoming increasingly popular in the capital city and they're not limited to just tacos anymore with a broad selection of gourmet treats. Here are five top picks as well was their locations:
Red Hook Lobster Pound
Now you don't have to live on the coast to take advantage of lobster for lunch. And what a lunch! This truck is the mobile version of Brooklyn's Red Hook Lobster Pound (yes, Maine lobster coming from a Brooklyn institution). With its easily identifiable red and white striped awning, the truck offers the Maine-style Roll with fresh Maine lobster meat tossed in their signature lemon-based mayo with a sprinkle of sea salt, white pepper and celery for crunch. Get there early as lines are long. Locations include Eastern Market on Capitol Hill, Ballston, Crystal City and the Farragut and McPherson Square Metro Stations.
Pepe
A fixture on the DC restaurant scene, it only makes sense that chef Jose Andres has brought his Iberian-style plates to the street (Pepe is his nickname). Favorites include the Pepito de Iberico (seared pork and serrano ham seasoned with roasted peppers, caramelized onions and aioli), Futbol Club Barcelona (Pepe's version of a BLT with shallot mayo and thinly sliced chicken bacon). Pepe also offers seasonal soups during the colder months. You can catch Pepe at L'Enfant Plaza, Union Station, and Metro Center, among other stops.
Basil Thyme
This rolling station of epicurean delights serves gourmet lasagnas and made-from-scratch pastas, including favorites such as black truffle lasagna with portobellos and gorgonzola. The "design-your-own pasta" option allows hungry patrons to select your choice of noodle (spaghetti, ravioli, fettucine, or bow tie) and specialty sauces ranging from marinara, meat, pesto, and vodka, all made from family recipes. And, if you have room for desserts, they're equally tempting with chocolate-dipped cannolis and tiramisu on the menu. Warning -- running to the truck to secure your place in line probably won't do much to burn the calories you're about to consume. Basil Thyme typically rolls through NoMa, Union Station, L'Enfant Plaza, and Navy Yard.
DC Empanadas
This light blue former ice cream truck emblazoned with the "DC E" logo is run by a husband-wife team who supposedly first met in kindergarten. Today DC Empanadas are offered by different types of meat ranging from ground sirloin and spanish olives in the "Traditional" to the "Executive Order" stuffed with bacon cheeseburgers. Non-meat options are also available. Check them out at Union Market, Metro Center, Navy Yard, and other DC locations
Carnivore BBQ and Mac Attack
This list wouldn't be complete without a BBQ option and Carnivore nicely fills the spot. The owner originally launched a business delivering New York bagels to DC, later switching gears to offer drooling Washingtonians succulent wood-smoked meats. The owner credits the flavors to his custom wood smoker -- "Old Smoky" -- hand-built by a disabled War veteran. The truck's signature dish is a decadent pulled pork sandwich topped with mac and cheese. Look for the Carnivore truck at Union Market, Farragut Square, Metro Center, and L'Enfant Plaza.

Related Links

The next best thing to a lazy breakfast in bed is brunch. While Cleveland Park boasts a lot of restaurants, it’s not necessarily known as a brunch mecca but here are two local favorite hot spots when you just gotta have a good brunch.

Ted’s Bulletin – located at 1818 14th Street, Ted’s is known for “legendary brunch” meals, including creamy “adult milkshakes” and home-made pop tarts (raves to the Peanut Butter version of everyone’s favorite childhood treat). The pop-tarts and other baked goods are sold up-front – the restaurant aspect of Ted’s takes the form of a retro diner. Menus are “ the bulletins” referred to in the “Ted’s Bulletin” moniker. If you take a minute to read the bulletin, you’ll learn who the original Ted was, while perusing favorites such the “Walk of Shame” Breakfast Burrito and the “T.U.B.S” – Ted’s Ultimate Breakfast Sammy which includes a mix of egg, sausage, bacon and cheddar with hash browns on the side. Diners cite the generous portions and super-friendly staff as the reasons they keep coming back.

Ardeo + Bardeo – if it’s a champagne brunch kind of day, then Ardeo + Bardeo is your place, located at 3311 Connecticut Avenue. For $28, you get the “bottomless mimosas,” an appetizer and entrée – a pretty good deal for the price. Even though you may have hated brussel sprouts as a child, the veggie has seen new life recently as the star of the Ardeo appetizer line-up. Served with pistachios and feta, it’s exceptionally flavorful. The Poutine is another favorite – french fries sinfully covered in pimento cheese and andouille gravy. And, according to regulars, the “bottomless” adjective is extremely accurate in describing the constant Mimosa refills and attentive service.

Related Links

So, it’s not surprising that some of the more popular restaurants there excel at comfort food. Cheesetique and Dairy Godmother, just to a name a couple, won’t break your wallet but will certainly destroy your willpower and any semblance of a diet.

Cheesetique, located on Mt. Vernon Avenue, is sometimes described as a specialty cheese shop that just happens to sell wine in the back. Beloved for its homey, no-nonsense ambience, Cheesetique provides a twist on traditional favorites such as mac and cheese and the classic grilled cheese sandwich. In fact, Food & Wine Magazine named Cheesetique’s original and classic mac and cheese as one of the best in the US in 2012. More sophisticated mac variations include gorgonzola with crumbled bacon, and if you’re not visualizing this creamiest of concoctions yet, the “billy goat mac” dish with roasted chicken and perfectly toasted goat cheese will break you down. The “grown-up grilled cheese” is another signature dish that melts a Prairie Breeze Cheddar on grilled sourdough with a suggested Chardonnay accompaniment.

And, while we’re having our dairy fix, it’s impossible not to mention the sumptuous Dairy Godmother also located on Mt Vernon Avenue. Dairy Godmother specializes in Wisconsin-style frozen custard, which according to their Web site must be at least 1.4% egg yolk (pasteurized) and at least 10% milk fat to be considered “genuine custard.” Either way, it’s delicious. The store features a daily flavor of fresh custard and sorbet, on its “flavor forecast,” despite the weather outside. If you’re looking for a warmer treat, Dairy Godmother also sells hot cocoa with a unique house-made marshmallows.

Related Links

In the past few years Washington DC has made a transition from being known as a “political hub” to a “foodie town.” If you are planning on making Washington DC your home or simply coming to town for a visit, then get ready to loosen your belt a notch or two because DC is home to some of the best restaurants. With so many restaurants to choose from, we have taken the liberty of narrowing the list down to just two of the best places to enjoy culinary delights.
City Zen at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Chef Ziebold creates modern American cuisine delicacies for the diners of CityZen. This amazing restaurant features dishes that explode with flavor. A four-course prix fixe menu, a six-course chef’s tasting menu, or a six-course vegetarian tasting menu all await your palate. But wait, here’s more!
CityZen takes you on a culinary journey from land, to sea, to veggie. Throughout this journey your sense of taste, sight, smell, and even sound are employed. But what is a good meal without a great finish? Meals at CityZen are completed with the creations of award-winning Executive Pastry Chef Matthew Petersen. Reservations are recommended to best enjoy this exclusive dining experience.
Bourbon Steak at the Four Seasons, Georgetown
Bourbon Steak is a delectable Michael Bina restaurant that of course features a hard-to-beat steak. But don’t let the name fool you. Bourbon Steak also has a wide arrangement of other dishes, including tuna tartar and vegetarian dishes that don’t leave you missing meat. Reservations are recommended for private dining experiences; the restaurant also features a lounge and a weather-permitting open patio.
While we may have said that we would narrow the list of Washington DC restaurants down to just two, we felt that we had to include a few of the other top-rated dining experiences. Blue Duck Tavern, Restaurant Nora, and Marcel’s are all amazing restaurants that should be immediately tried. What can we say – Washington DC is a “foodie town” after all!

Related Links

The farm-to-table program will be expanded to include more fresh meat and produce options at the various locations. Other additions include local sourcing from 3 Stars Brewing Company, DC Brau and Port City Brewing Company. Other new food offerings will also be available outside the ballpark. These upgrades are all a part of the new agreement with Levy and will provide a better overall fan experience. With all of DC's free museums, monuments, lectures, concerts, and festivals, visitors can take in all the DC hotspots virtually free. Congress takes a recess in August, which clears out the city. It's a great time to take in some of the tourist attractions as the crowds are noticeably thinner.
