Palisades is one of DC’s rare finds — a tree-lined neighborhood with a small town feel. Stretching along the Potomac River from the western edge of Georgetown University to the Maryland border, Palisades is removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown, despite its urban zip code.
Families with young children are gravitating to the neighborhood - not just because of the peaceful setting — but because residents can live in a spacious home adjacent to a lot of green space in an area that still boasts a strong sense of community.
With its close proximity to the river and to nature, it’s easy to take advantage of the water to rent a kayak or canoe at Fletcher’s Cove or fish in the Potomac. Another popular family outing is to ride bikes along the Capital Crescent Trail. The Capital Crescent Trail and the C&O Towpath are some of DC’s best bike and running trails while <a href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/georgetown-real-estate/" title="georgetown real estate">Georgetown</a> is just a few minutes away by bike.
<a href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/palisades-real-estate" title="palisades real estate">Palisades</a> is another DC neighborhood that was developed along the streetcar line that originally connected Georgetown and Glen Echo. While the streetcar line shut down in 1961, it initially drew a number of affluent residents who built the area’s first mansions and estates.
In the post-war era, developers moved in to create subdivisions, resulting in a mix of architectural styles. The converted MacArthur Theater (now a CVS) is still a striking example of the Art Moderne style that was popular at one time.
While the neighborhood is largely residential, MacArthur Boulevard serves as the Palisades commercial area. The area boasts a wide selection of eateries and shops and is consistently rated as one of DC’s most walkable neighborhoods.
And, while Palisades is easy to get around in once you’re there, it does not have its own Metro stop so commuters will most likely require a car although there are several bus options and the more fit residents claim to rely on bikes to get in and out of Downtown DC.2021-10-29T05:45:00-07:002021-10-29T07:52:41-07:00Mark Washburntag:washingtondcrealestate.com,2012-09-20:1699The Best Washington DC Family Neighborhoods<br /><img src="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/uploads/stoddert_elementary_school_wm_450.jpg" alt="" class="img_box_center" width="450" height="300" />
If you're moving to the DC area with your family, it's important to choose your neighborhood wisely as DC offers a diverse mix of communities and not all are ideal for young families with children.
A few key factors to consider before moving into a new neighborhood include:
Area schools
Neighborhood amenities
Proximity of parks and recreation facilities
Affordability
Location and convenience
The list below includes popular family-friendly neighborhoods in <a title="washington dc real estate" href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/washington-dc-real-estate.php">Washington, DC</a> but your best bet is to visit both the community and the schools before making a decision.
<a title="Dupont Circle Real Estate" href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/dupont-circle-real-estate.php">Dupont Circle</a>
<a title="Mount Pleasant Real Estate" href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/mount-pleasant-real-estate.php">Mount Pleasant</a>
<a title="Palisades Real Estate" href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/palisades-real-estate.php">Palisades</a>
<a title="Georgetown Real Estate" href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/georgetown-real-estate.php">Georgetown</a>
<a title="Glover Park Real Estate" href="https://www.washingtondcrealestate.com/glover-park-real-estate.php">Glover Park</a>
Palisades is home to some of the top-rated schools in the District with some highly ranked private schools located nearby. Stoddert, in Glover Park, is one of the top ranked elementary schools in the area.
Buena Vista and Anacostia are the most affordable communities on the list. About half the homes in Buena Vista have children and 40% of the residents in Anacostia have children. Both neighborhoods have become increasingly gentrified over the last decade and have a close-knit feel to them.
More affluent neighborhoods for families include Dupont Circle, Palisades and Georgetown. These three areas provide excellent schools, larger homes as well as a number of conveniences such as upscale shopping and dining.
Mount Pleasant is another strong choice with its renowned farmer's market and a close proximity to the zoo. If you choose Glover Park for your new home, you will become a part of an active community that celebrates a number of events.
Any of these seven family neighborhoods could be right for you. Again, it's important to visit the area during different times of the day to get a sense of traffic patterns and a true indication of the neighborhood feel.<br /><br />Related Links
