Increasingly, luxury living in Washington, DC, translates to a hip, up-market condo. With new developments constructed at a dizzying pace over the last few years, condos are becoming the destination of choice for both young professionals and empty nesters looking to move back to the city for jobs or a change in lifestyle. Many baby boomers want to "downsize" from a family home but are still looking for a good-size condo to house prized possessions they're not ready to part with such as a piano, or heirloom furniture. The newly constructed lofts offer the type of space these new buyers crave -- with open floor plans, floor-to-ceiling windows, and soaring ceilings.
Logan Circle, Mt. Vernon Triangle and Shaw are all "hot" neighborhoods where money continues to be invested in new developments. Many of the luxury developments are clustered in the northwest quadrant. In fact, once upon a time, the only luxury condo options were the glorious penthouses in Georgetown overlooking the harbor or other water view. Today, these choices still exist with the exclusive residences at the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown, but there are a number of other possibilities. Condo fees also vary with the level of amenities -- they can be a few hundreds of dollars a month for street parking to thousands of dollars a month for security, a doorman, underground parking, and many shared common areas, such as a gym.
