DC Attractions Perfect for the Entire Family
Washington, DC, offers a number of historic attractions and activities for everyone, including families and those on a budget. Following are a few family-friendly ideas for in and around the city:
Six Flags America
One of the top choices for kids of all ages is Six Flags America. This theme park, located near Baltimore, Maryland, is perfect for residents of D.C. as it's only about 30 minutes from downtown. With over 100 rides, a huge water park and plenty of shows, everybody can find something to enjoy at the park. You can visit Six Flags America from April to October.
The Zoos
Both the National Zoo and Reston Zoo provide a great experience for families. The National Zoo features more than 400 species of animals and as a part of the Smithsonian Institute, admission is free of charge. The National Zoo is located on Connecticut Avenue in Woodley Park and is a short walk from either the Woodley Park or Cleveland Park Metro Stations. The Reston Zoo is smaller and provides a more intimate setting and boasts camels, reptiles, antelope, ostrich and more.
The Discovery Theater
As part of the Ripley Center, the Smithsonian’s Discovery Theater features classic stories and music perfect for school-aged children.
Imagination Stage
Classic and modern plays are performed year-round at Imagination Stage located in Bethesda, Maryland. With all kinds of choices, this stage provides the perfect type of show for everybody.
Sporting Events
Washington D.C. is home to professional sports teams in baseball, basketball, ice hockey, football and soccer. The Verizon Center hosts the NBA Wizards, the NHL Capitals and the WNBA Mystics. The Verizon Center is located in the Penn Quarter neighborhood directly above the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro Station on the Red Line.
